Congressman Ryan Mackenzie, who represents Pennsylvania’s 7th Congressional District, recently visited a homeless encampment at Jordan Creek in Allentown. The visit on June 30 was organized by the Allentown Fire Department.
Mackenzie highlighted the growing challenges related to homelessness in the Lehigh Valley area, including cities like Allentown and Bethlehem. “The increase in the number and size of local homeless encampments is becoming a source of concern for residents — and for good reason,” he stated. He emphasized that these encampments can pose dangers to those living there, harm the environment, and complicate emergency response efforts.
During his visit, Mackenzie engaged with firefighters about their experiences dealing with emergencies at these sites. He also spoke with residents of the encampment.
Expressing gratitude towards local first responders, Mackenzie said, “I’m grateful to the Allentown Fire Department and all of our local first responders for doing lifesaving work at these sites despite frequently dangerous conditions.” He stressed the importance of addressing issues such as cost of living, mental health, and substance abuse while also focusing on immediate risks faced by first responders and communities.
Mackenzie pledged continued support for federal legislation aimed at increasing affordable housing supply, combating illicit drugs, and tackling mental health issues.
