Congressman Ryan Mackenzie recognized local students for their participation in the 2025 Congressional App Challenge during a celebration at his Northampton Office, according to a March 6 announcement. The event brought together students, families, and educators from Pennsylvania’s 7th District to highlight achievements in coding and technology.

The Congressional App Challenge aims to encourage middle and high school students to develop skills in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Events like this are intended to inspire young people to pursue careers in these fields and foster innovation within the community.

During the celebration, students demonstrated the apps they created and discussed their motivations as well as challenges faced during development. Devansh Garg was recognized for creating SafeStep, an app designed to assist individuals who struggle with balance or are at risk of falling. “The app I created is called SafeStep. It’s an app that can help anyone who struggles with balance or falls,” said Devansh Garg. “My motivation for creating this app came in response to real situations that my family has faced. My mother and grandmother have both experienced falls that caused injuries. I wanted to create something that wouldn’t just benefit them, but also the millions of others who suffer from the same problems.”

Congressman Mackenzie said, “The Congressional App Challenge is a great way for students to explore the possibilities of technology and innovation. It was great to meet with these talented students, hear about the inspiration behind their apps, and see the creativity and hard work that went into their projects. Opportunities like this help encourage the next generation of innovators and problem-solvers in our communities.”

Mackenzie serves as the representative for Pennsylvania’s 7th Congressional District according to his official website. His district includes Lehigh, Northampton, Carbon counties, and part of Monroe County according to his official website. He supports community programs such as art competitions, commendations, grant assistance according to his official website, offers Spanish-language services by appointment in Downtown Allentown according to his official website, and focuses on issues including healthcare improvements, workforce development, taxpayer protection, environmental conservation, veteran support and government reform according to his official website.

Mackenzie has also authored legislation during his time in Pennsylvania’s state House aimed at enhancing healthcare access, strengthening workforce opportunities, protecting taxpayers’ interests, preserving natural resources, supporting veterans’ needs and reforming government operations according to his official website.

As STEM education continues gaining importance nationwide for preparing future workers in technology-driven industries, events like the Congressional App Challenge may play a role in encouraging more young people from districts such as Pennsylvania’s 7th District toward careers in science and technology.
