Congressman Ryan Mackenzie, who represents Pennsylvania’s 7th Congressional District, visited Lehigh Valley International Airport to discuss new investments in air traffic safety and efficiency. This visit comes amid challenges faced by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), including a shortage of certified air traffic controllers and outdated facilities.
The congressman highlighted a recently passed budget that allocates over $12 billion for air traffic modernization. “Millions of Americans depend on air travel daily, and they deserve to feel confident every time they fly,” stated Congressman Mackenzie. He emphasized the need for modern systems due to recent incidents at airports raising safety concerns.
The budget outlines several improvements, including $1.9 billion for a new Air Route Traffic Control Center (ARTCC) to replace existing centers and enhance efficiency. An additional $100 million is set aside for further consolidation of ARTCCs, while $1 billion will go towards Terminal Radar Approach Control facilities’ recapitalization.
Equipment upgrades are also planned with $4.75 billion earmarked for telecommunications infrastructure and system upgrades, along with $3 billion to replace radar systems. The budget also includes funding for weather observation systems and advanced training technologies for air traffic controllers.
