Congressman Ryan Mackenzie, representing Pennsylvania’s 7th Congressional District, has played a role in passing a significant budget aimed at addressing the needs of the Greater Lehigh Valley. Just seven months into his term, Mackenzie has contributed to efforts to prevent what he describes as “the largest tax increase in history,” while also providing tax relief for working families and seniors, modernizing the military, and securing U.S. borders.
“As we began this term, we understood what the people of the Greater Lehigh Valley were counting on: lower costs, a stronger economy, secure borders, and policies that put America First,” said Congressman Mackenzie. “This budget follows through on those priorities — delivering tax relief to local families, supporting small businesses, protecting essential benefits for vulnerable populations, and providing the resources to modernize our military and secure the border once and for all.”
The U.S. House-passed bill includes reforms and investments reflecting American priorities. Key provisions include:
– Tax Relief: The budget maintains current rates for high-income earners while increasing the Child Tax Credit to $2,200 from $1,000 before TCJA and indexing it to inflation. It also raises the standard deduction to $15,750 from $6,350 before TCJA with inflation indexing and introduces a $6,000 deduction for seniors earning under $75,000.
– Support for Workers: Federal taxes on tips and overtime pay are eliminated through 2028 with a new deduction created for interest on auto loans for American-made vehicles.
– Protecting Programs: Medicaid is strengthened with reforms such as limiting benefits for illegal immigrants and adding work requirements for able-bodied adults. SNAP is incentivized to remove waste without affecting states with low error rates.
– Small Business Assistance: Owners can permanently deduct 20% of qualified business income and immediately expense investments in equipment or research.
– Border Security Funding: The budget allocates $150 billion towards completing border barriers and expanding deportation capacity among other measures.
– Defense Investments: Funds are provided to enhance military readiness against threats like China while investing in rural infrastructure.
– Energy Production: Barriers are removed to boost domestic energy production by allowing more leases.
Mackenzie criticized recent attempts by special interests groups aiming to hinder Congress’s ability to deliver these promises. “The people of our region have been forced to experience a well-financed effort by special interests…to spread lies,” he stated. He emphasized his commitment toward protecting benefits crucially needed within communities across Greater Lehigh Valley despite opposing narratives portraying certain provisions negatively.
