Congressman Ryan Mackenzie, representing Pennsylvania’s 7th Congressional District, has successfully passed his first piece of legislation in the U.S. House of Representatives. The Solidify Iran Sanctions Act of 2025 aims to remove the sunset clause from the Iran Sanctions Act of 1996. This move is intended to maintain restrictions on Iran’s ability to finance terrorism and engage in regional aggression.

“As the current administration conducts negotiations with Iran and seeks to apply ‘maximum pressure,’ the United States must send a clear and unwavering message: we will not tolerate Iran’s support for terrorism, its pursuit of nuclear weapons, or its attacks on American service members and allies,” stated Congressman Mackenzie. “With this vote, Congress will strengthen America’s national security standing. The administration’s negotiating position demonstrates that the U.S. remains committed to holding the Iranian regime accountable for its malign behavior.”

Iran’s continued production of weapons, support for terrorist proxies, and attacks that threaten Americans have been cited as reasons for maintaining these sanctions. Recent incidents include Iranian-backed strikes on U.S. troops such as a drone strike in January 2024 that resulted in the deaths of three American soldiers in Jordan and Houthi assaults on U.S. Navy ships in the Gulf of Aden.

By preventing the expiration of existing sanctions law, this act ensures that crucial national security measures remain available for future administrations.

“I’m proud that my first bill to pass the House strengthens our national security and supports our servicemembers,” said Congressman Mackenzie. “This is about keeping America safe, protecting our troops, and cutting off the financial lifelines of Iran’s terrorist network.”

The legislation now proceeds to the U.S. Senate for further consideration.
