Bipartisan legislation aimed at amending Pennsylvania’s physician licensing law has been signed into law, as announced by Representative Joe Emrick of Nazareth. Emrick co-sponsored the bill with Representative Frank Burns of Johnstown, both serving as chairs of the House Professional Licensure Committee.
The legislative change arrives as soccer clubs worldwide prepare to travel to the United States for major events like the FIFA Club World Cup this summer and the FIFA World Cup in 2026. Philadelphia is set to host eight matches from the Club World Cup and six from the World Cup over the next two summers.
The new law permits team physicians traveling internationally with their club or national team to provide medical care to their players during games without requiring a Pennsylvania medical license. “As we welcome some of the world’s highest-performing athletes, we want to ensure they receive the highest quality of care by their own team physicians,” said Emrick.
