Rep. Zach Mako and Sen. Pat Browne have announced that Slatington Borough will receive a grant of $105,488 for the repair of the Slate Heritage Trail. This funding was secured through the Commonwealth Financing Authority’s Greenway, Trails and Recreation Program, which supports projects involving greenways, recreational trails, open spaces, and parks.
Mako expressed enthusiasm about the project, highlighting its benefits for local residents and visitors: “One of Slatington’s treasures is its trail and access to the Lehigh River,” he said. He emphasized that rehabilitating the trail would encourage more recreational activities and improve community health and wellness.
Browne also commented on the importance of maintaining local trails: “Our region’s extensive trail network continues to provide residents with tremendous outdoor recreational opportunities, improving the quality of life in our region.” He noted his collaboration with Mako to secure funds for Slatington's portion of this network.
The grant will be used for several specific improvements along the trail connecting to the Slatington Trailhead within the Delaware and Lehigh National Heritage Corridor. The project will focus on repairing the trail surface, enhancing drainage systems, re-decking a trestle bridge, extending a safety fence, and refurbishing a covered bridge parking area.
