HARRISBURG – Rep. Zach Mako (R-Lehigh/Northampton) has introduced legislation aimed at bringing accountability to the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections as part of a broader government reform initiative. Mako, a member of the House Appropriations Committee, expressed concerns about the department's financial demands, stating, "The department received an almost 6% increase in the current fiscal year and is requesting a 7.7% increase for the coming year. This is not sustainable."

The proposed bill would mandate the DOC to utilize the Pennsylvania Office of State Inspector General to conduct financial audits, investigate complaints of critical incidents, identify systemic issues, and propose improvements. Mako emphasized the importance of finding cost-savings while maintaining public safety and humane treatment of inmates. He stated, "We must look for cost-savings within the Department of Corrections...it cannot come at a runaway cost to the taxpayers."

The initiative aims to enhance transparency and oversight within the Department of Corrections by involving an independent entity in auditing and investigative processes. Mako's efforts align with the goal of promoting fiscal responsibility and efficiency in government operations.
