Rep. Zach Mako announced that over $5.1 million in grants have been allocated to various projects across the 183rd Legislative District, thanks to the Commonwealth Financing Authority. The funding was secured through collaboration with Sens. Jarrett Coleman and Nick Miller.
"Each of these projects addresses needed improvements in the Lehigh Valley," Mako stated, emphasizing the importance of water and sewer projects for residents' health and safety.
Coleman expressed satisfaction about supporting local initiatives: "I’m pleased to announce that we’re going to be able to provide some assistance to local projects via grant funding."
Miller highlighted the necessity of infrastructure investment: "Keeping our sewers, wastewater treatment plants and waterlines updated and maintained is vital to the safety and health of our community." He also thanked the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development for its support.
The first round of funding originates from COVID-19 American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds allocated under Act 54 of 2022, with $205.4 million designated for water-related construction projects. Grants awarded include $2 million for Northampton's sewer line rehabilitation, $2.2 million for upgrades at Pennsville wastewater treatment plant by Lehigh Township Municipal Authority, and $328,330 for North Whitehall Township stormwater improvements.
A second set of funds comes from ARPA allocations under Act 54 of 2022 amounting to $105.6 million aimed at improving water systems. Slatington Borough received $235,957 for a water main replacement project on Maple Spring Drive, while Bath Borough Authority was granted $310,000 for water line replacements on several streets.
Additionally, the PA Arts and Culture Recovery Program (PACR), funded by ARPA, supports arts organizations affected by COVID-19. The Lehigh Valley Zoo received a grant of $95,000 for operating expenses and new programs.
