This week, a new law was enacted in Pennsylvania aimed at increasing the number of barber instructors in the state. The legislation, sponsored by Representative Zach Mako, has been signed by the governor. It seeks to address the shortage of barber-teachers that has persisted across Pennsylvania.
Rep. Mako expressed his satisfaction with the new law, stating, "I’m thrilled to see my legislation signed into law." He further added, "I have been working on this issue for the past four legislative sessions. The number of barber-teachers will now increase so that Pennsylvanians will have an easier time finding a barber in the future."
The newly enacted law introduces several changes: it reduces the minimum age for taking the barber-teacher examination from 23 to 18 years; decreases required training hours from 1,250 to 500; and permits individuals with both cosmetology and barber licenses to acquire a barber-teacher license after completing necessary training and examinations. Additionally, it allows licensed barber-teachers from other states with similar requirements to obtain licensure in Pennsylvania upon passing an examination.
The legislation will take effect in 60 days.
Rep. Mako's district covers Lowhill and North Whitehall townships and Slatington Borough in Lehigh County, as well as parts of Northampton County including Allen, East Allen, Lehigh and Moore townships, along with Bath, North Catasauqua, Northampton and Walnutport boroughs.
