State Representative Zach Mako | Pennsylvania 83rd Legislative District
Rep. Zach Mako from the Pennsylvania House of Representatives announced his intention to introduce legislation aimed at enhancing accountability within the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections (DOC). This initiative is part of a broader "Back to Basics" government reform effort.
Mako, who has served on the House Appropriations Committee for two legislative sessions, expressed concerns over the DOC's financial requests. "As a member of the House Appropriations Committee for two legislative sessions, I have listened as representatives from the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections have appeared before the committee asking for significant funding increases," he stated. He noted that the department had received an almost 6% increase in funding for the current fiscal year and is now seeking an additional 7.7% increase for the next year, which he described as unsustainable.
The proposed bill would mandate that the DOC utilize the Pennsylvania Office of State Inspector General to audit its finances and investigate complaints related to critical incidents. This measure aims to identify systemic issues and suggest possible improvements. Mako emphasized, "We must look for cost-savings within the Department of Corrections." He acknowledged the state's duty to ensure public safety and humane treatment of inmates but stressed that these responsibilities should not come with excessive costs to taxpayers. "I’m hopeful by involving the Office of the State Inspector General, we can control costs."
The 183rd District represented by Mako includes Lowhill and North Whitehall townships and Slatington Borough in Lehigh County, along with several areas in Northampton County.
