Rep. Joe Emrick of Northampton has announced that his proposed House bill aimed at protecting property taxpayers is headed to the governor for signing.

Emrick introduced the bill after a constituent was fined over $1,000 due to not receiving their property tax bill. "After learning that one of my constituents was fined over $1,000 through no fault of their own, simply because that they did not receive their property tax bill, it was time to act and change this outdated law," said Emrick.

The legislation proposes waiving the 10% penalty during the first year of homeownership if new owners do not receive their tax bill. Property owners will be required to pay the full amount of taxes due and provide an affidavit along with a copy of their deed as proof of purchase date.

This measure received bipartisan support, passing with a vote count of 199-1. The law will come into effect in 90 days once signed by the governor.
