Rep. Ann Flood (R-Northampton) recently organized a hearing in Bethlehem with the House Republican Policy Committee to discuss tourism and local business opportunities in the Lehigh Valley. The aim was to explore how the Legislature can aid the travel and tourism industry, focusing on economic growth and overcoming obstacles within the hospitality sector.
The hearing featured testimonies about popular local attractions such as Musikfest, Dorney Park, and Iron Pigs baseball games, which collectively draw millions of visitors annually. Suggestions were made on strategies to increase visitor numbers further.
Alex Michaels, CEO of Discover Lehigh Valley, emphasized the appeal of outdoor activities in the region. "Outdoor enthusiasts and tourists often find themselves visiting the Lehigh Valley and its parks, scenic trails, and beautiful riverside areas," he said. He advocated for state support in infrastructure improvements and transportation investments like trolley systems to enhance accessibility for visitors.
Kassie Hilgert, President and CEO of ArtsQuest, highlighted the industry's role in job creation. "We are job creators," she stated. She underscored the importance of cultural amenities for attracting and retaining employees to boost family and business establishment in the area.
Flood expressed pride in the diverse attractions available locally. "We are blessed to live in such a diverse region filled with so many things to do," she remarked, mentioning various entertainment options that attract people from across Pennsylvania and neighboring states.
Rep. Josh Kail (R-Beaver/Washington), chairman of the Republican Policy Committee, noted the significance of tourism as an economic driver for Pennsylvania. "Today's hearing highlighted the strength of tourism and hospitality as an economic driver for Pennsylvania," he said.
