Gov. Tom Wolf recently announced that the Pennsylvania Military Community Enhancement Commission (PMCEC) will be funding more than $220,000 for transportation and safety improvements at military facilities in Philadelphia and Cumberland County.

In a release on March 4, Wolf said that PMCEC will be sending funds to the Cumberland County Industrial Development Authority as well as the Philadelphia Authority for Industrial Development amounting to $73,102 and $148,250, respectively. This will involve surveys conducted by PennDOT.

“Transportation safety is critical in all walks of life, but particularly when it involves members of our armed forces,” Wolf said. “This funding will help Pennsylvania members of the Army and Navy travel more efficiently and safely.”

For the Cumberland County Industrial Development Authority, PennDOT will conduct a transportation study at the U.S. Army College in Carlisle, which gives graduate-level instruction for senior military officers, as well as civilians who are on the verge of senior leadership duties. There is a narrow two-lane road that connects US-11 and Claremont Road leading into the barracks. This study is mainly focused on making the road to the Keystone Arms Apartments safer, which houses many of their employees.

For the Philadelphia Authority for Industrial Development, PennDOT will also perform a structural, mechanical and electrical inspection of the Lift Bridge, which spans the Reserve Basin used by the Naval Surface Warfare Center and Navy Inactive Ship Maintenance.
