Visiting Prof. Sun You receives visual art award from AHL Foundation

Sun You, visiting assistant professor of art, is one of three recipients of the 2022 Contemporary Visual Art Award presented by the AHL Foundation Inc., a nonprofit organization that supports contemporary artists of Korean heritage living in the United States.

You, who uses everyday objects and craft materials to create provisional tableaus celebrating women’s work, domestic ornamentation, and the language of abstraction, received a bronze award for her entire body of work that she has been creating over the last seven years.

“When I first moved to New York, I found support and camaraderie among a cohort of other Korean and Korean American artists. This group has been crucial to my artistic development and sense of belonging in the city,” You says. “It makes me really happy to be acknowledged through this award in this community, and the Korean Foundation AHL represented in what I hope will be a primary resource for Korean artists’ works, writing, and discourse.”

A New York-based artist, You has exhibited her work in galleries and museums internationally. She also founded and manages President Clinton Projects, a curatorial project, and co-runs a nonprofit artist collective gallery, Tiger Strikes Asteroid, in New York.

Artwork by You and the other winning artists will be featured in the T&W Foundation Contemporary Visual Art Awards Winners Exhibition: Taking Form, Oct. 8-26 at the AHL Foundation, 2605 Frederick Douglass Blvd., New York, NY 10030.
