On February 14, 2024, Representative Joe Emrick (R-Northampton) announced that seven fire and emergency medical services (EMS) companies in the 137th District have been awarded grant funding through the 2023-24 Pennsylvania Fire Company and Emergency Medical Services Grant Program. Emrick expressed his gratitude for the approval of these grants, stating, "In time of need, these companies are right there to support and protect, so this state funding will contribute to their life-saving operations."

The following organizations in the local area received grants and the corresponding amounts:

- Hanover Township Volunteer Fire Company (Fire) - $16,173.90.

- Hanover Township Volunteer Fire Company (EMS) - $15,000.

- Hecktown Volunteer Fire Company #No. 1 - $15,000.

- Palmer Municipal Fire Department - $16,951.99.

- Suburban EMS Inc. - $14,725.

- Tatamy Fire Company - $13,061.55.

- Upper Nazareth Fire Department - $15,000.

These grants will support various projects and programs including facility upgrades, equipment purchases, debt reduction, training and certification, education and public outreach, and recruitment and retention efforts. Fire companies were also given the opportunity to apply for construction savings accounts for the purpose of new facility construction.

The ongoing funding program was established by the General Assembly and is financed by slot machine gaming proceeds, not General Fund tax revenue. The program is administered by the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency, with the application process handled through the Office of the State Fire Commissioner (OSFC). It is important to note that the funding amounts are contingent on the recipients filing their grant agreements with the OSFC.

This grant program is crucial in supporting the vital work of local fire and EMS companies, ensuring they have the necessary resources to continue their life-saving operations. Representative Emrick's announcement of these grants highlights the importance of investing in these organizations that play a critical role in protecting the community.
