Rep. Zach Mako, representing the Lehigh and Northampton areas, has expressed concerns regarding Governor Josh Shapiro's proposed $45.8 billion budget for the 2023-24 fiscal year. As a member of the House Appropriations Committee, Mako is set to scrutinize the proposal further.
Mako highlighted several issues with the budget plan, stating that it does not seem fiscally responsible as it could deplete reserves and the Rainy Day Fund. "It's not raining here in the Commonwealth to the point that we need to open our umbrella," he remarked.
Another concern raised by Mako is about transitioning funding for the Pennsylvania State Police out of the motor licensing fund. While he agrees with this idea in principle, he questions where a dedicated funding source will be found for state police operations.
Mako also pointed out potential problems with education funding within Shapiro's proposal. He noted plans to reduce funds for K-12 student bus transportation at a time when school districts are already struggling to find drivers. Additionally, Mako criticized the lack of new funding for students seeking alternatives to public schools through programs like the Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC).
"I look forward to helping to craft a budget that makes sense for all Pennsylvania residents and doesn’t put our future at risk," said Mako.
