Rep. Zach Mako (R-Lehigh/Northampton) has announced an event to assist vehicle owners with replacing illegible license plates. The event, in collaboration with the Lehigh County Sheriff's Office, will take place on Tuesday, May 9, at Kolapechka Park in Coplay from 4-7 p.m. Pre-registration is required by May 8 and can be completed by calling 610-760-9805 or emailing jnestor@pahousegop.com.
Mako emphasized the importance of readable license plates, stating, "License plates can become damaged due to weather and age, which results in the letters and numbers becoming difficult to read." He added that PennDOT offers free replacements for such plates but acknowledged that some find the process cumbersome. This event aims to simplify it for vehicle owners.
At the event, if a plate is deemed illegible—defined by PennDOT as one where characters cannot be recognized from 50 feet or show signs of blistering, peeling, discoloration, or loss of reflectivity—paperwork will be processed at no cost. A new standard replacement plate should arrive within weeks to the owner's home address.
Additionally, the event will offer CarFit, an educational program designed for seniors to evaluate how well their vehicles fit them. Those interested in CarFit can register by contacting Renee Fritzinger at rfritzinger@hsnetwork.org or 610-554-3319.
The 183rd House District represented by Mako includes several townships and boroughs across Lehigh and Northampton counties.
